Course Objective
As
part of this course, student
1. To know the concepts of information of an event
and the entropy of a probability distribution. To know the concepts of
information source, information channel and the significance of
Shannon's theorems.
2. To know the parameters associated with a block
code and their relationship to its error-detecting and error-correcting
capabilities. To understand the main applications of modular arithmetic
to the construction of popular block codes.
Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of this course, students should be able to:
1. Apply the basics of information theory to calculate channel capacity and other measures.
2. Design specific data compression techniques and calculate the compression achieved.
3. Apply and control specific coding methods and be able to calculate the rate and error probabilities achieved.
4. Understand the basic concepts and complexity of cryptographic security methods and their practical applications.
